Glasgow pushing to encourage more city cycling
Work has been ongoing to increase the amount of cyclists within the city. ng Homes have created 192 secure spaces for people to store bikes in Glasgow.
The social landlords engaged with numerous partners to promote cycling within the community. Initial funding was secured in 2019 from charity, Cycling Scotland.
This highlights the successful work from ng’s Active Travel Hub initiative, which has been created in conjunction with On Bikes.
Based in Blackhill, the community charity play a vital role in promoting cycling. They provide free bicycles to individuals who cannot afford them and offer programs to teach bike maintenance.
Rick Baxter, On Bikes coordinator, said: “People don’t have room in their houses to store their bikes and they’re no longer able to store them outside of their doors, due to the fire hazards.
“What ng has brought is an Armadillo system, so you can store your bikes safely.”
On Bikes will continue to offer free programs, as their program continues to get busier. The charity have given away over 350 bikes in the previous few weeks.
“We try to do the best for our community,” added Baxter. “We offer free workshops to get your bikes fixed and to offer bikes for the community. We’re giving that ability to a lot of people who can’t afford it.
“For us, we’re only two miles away from the town center, but it takes two busses to get there. Cycling is a great way to get around: it’s healthy, it’s free and it’s enjoyable.”
