Glasgow’s restoration plans underway to tackle housing emergency

The refurbishments provides an opportunity to make use of abandoned properties with homelessness rising

The housing emergency in Glasgow has property high on demand

Glasgow City Council have announced they have refurbished 1,700 empty homes to make them habitable again.

This project was launched in 2019 initially to tackle the housing problems and the update comes four months after the city declared a housing emergency.

The council said it was delighted at the progress made but say more work will need to be done with property in high demand.

They pledged to renovate approximately 250 abandoned and derelict homes annually, which comes after reports highlighting over 10,000 council properties were lying empty.

Adam Paterson, advocacy and campaigns officer at Positive Action and Housing, said: “In the last four months or maybe slightly more that there has been thousands of people across the UK experiencing homelessness.

“A lot of people have been struggling to access accommodation through local authorities across the UK.

“There has been a very large increase in the demand, not just at our own charity but at other third sector organisations requesting support around homelessness because there’s very limited options for people.”
