PS Waverley wins National Flagship of the Year

The Glasgow docked PS Waverley paddle steamer has been awarded national flagship of the year by National Historic Ships UK.

Three other boats won awards: Challenge; Provident and the Lady Daphne, but the Waverley took top prize above all.

Hannah Cunliffe, director of National Historic Ships UK said: “She’s really iconic in terms of her profile, you see her on the sky line with her distinctive funnels and you know that the Waverley’s in the area and she’s coming and it’s really exciting.

“She’ll get a broad pennant which is a flag that they can fly at their masthead and denotes their flagship status as well as a plaque which can go on her bulkhead just marking that she is the flagship of 2024.”

The award has been received with great esteem.

Paul Semple, General Manager of Waverley Excursions said:  “The award is well timed as we mark the 50th Anniversary since Waverley was gifted for £1 and saved for the nation as the last seagoing paddle steamer in the world. We will fly the Flagship Pennant with pride throughout the 2024 sailing season which begins in just over two weeks on Friday 17th May.”
