A man has been arrested after a cyclist was left seriously injured after a collision on Arngask Road, Govan yesterday evening.

The driver, 21, was driving a black Ford Fiesta when he crashed into the 47-year-old bike-rider at around 18:10 on Wednesday and fled the scene without stopping.

The victim was taken to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital after sustaining serious but not life-threatening injuries.

Police Scotland later found the vehicle on Kennedar Drive after tracing the driver and the passenger who is aged 19.

Sergeant Jack Swindells said: “We believe there were a number of people around at the time of the crash and we are asking anyone in the area at the time who can assist with our crash investigation to get in touch.

“We are also asking people to check their private CCTV and dash-cam footage and contact us if they have anything that could help with our enquiries.”

The incident occurred in a residential area in Glasgow shortly after it was announced that roads such as Arngask Road would be reduced to 20mph from 30mph to improve road safety and promote more cycling and walking in quieter and less congested neighbourhoods.

More than 3800 Glasgow streets will be converted to align with Scotland’s strategy to make most urban roads 20mph by 2025.

Nathan Brown, member of Let’s Ride Cycling Group, said: “There’s been a lot of incidents on that same junction and also similar junctions where I have had a few near misses myself.

“I think bringing in the new 20 miles-per-hour speed limit is a good thing, especially for cyclists and pedestrians because this is a general safety concern.”
