Worrying news for Dennistoun and the east in Glasgow loneliness findings

Loneliness in Glasgow is reaching a worrying stage - new figures have revealed.

Over 17% of people in the North East of Glasgow have revealed that they do not have a single close friend.

That is just one of numerous findings from one of the biggest UK polls on isolation, loneliness and belonging.

Several surrounding areas in Glasgow, including Dennistoun, were named as some of the loneliest within the UK.

40% of residents in Glasgow North East explained that they feel lonely often, or always.

In Glasgow North East, there resides the highest percentage of individuals across the United Kingdom who disclosed having no close friends, totalling 17%. This statistic is notable given Glasgow’s status as Scotland’s largest city.

This may also come as a surprise, considering that Glasweigans have been known for their particularly friendly and chatty nature.

We spoke to Jim Hume, from Change Mental Heath, who are advocating bringing people together in a bid to tackle loneliness and isolation.

Their service hosts an advice and support line, open Monday to Friday from 10 am to 4 pm, where advisers can signpost you to local support that most fits your needs.

Worryingly, one in four people who took part in the poll (25%) opened up to feeling unsafe to walk in the Glasgow North East area after dark.
