Celebrating World Press Freedom Day Amidst Global Tensions and Environmental Crises
Today we celebrate World Press Freedom Day to raise awareness of the importance of freedom of expression within journalism.
Its purpose is to guarantee that the government respects the people’s right to free speech and members of the public can access information.
It lands on 3 May every year and reminds individuals of the difficulties and danger that journalists and media organisations face.
This World Press Freedom Day has come around at a particularly unsafe time for those in this industry all over the world, with Israel’s war on Gaza becoming the most fatal conflict for media workers and journalists.
This year also has a fitting theme, “A Press for the Planet: Journalism in the Face of the Environmental Crisis.”
The day is dedicated to the importance of freedom of expression in journalism within current worldwide environmental issues.
