Swinney stands unopposed in SNP leadership race
John Swinney is set to become First Minister, replacing Humza Yousaf in the role.
He was previously Deputy First Minister under Nicola Sturgeon.
Kate Forbes was rumored to be in the running for the role but announced that she will be backing Swinney instead.
It seems he has offered Forbes an important role in his potential cabinet.
Political expert, David Jamieson, believes that, while he is a continuity candidate, his goal is to appeal to and bring unity to his party.
“I think the SNP have worked out that another damaging leadership contest would only worsen divisions inside the party, and factional divisions within the party are getting quite bad,” he said.
