Glasgow Film Theatre celebrate Black History Month
The Glasgow Film Theatre (GFT) have announced a special programme to commemorate Black History Month.
It will begin with the opening showing ‘Snapshot Shorts’ on Sunday afternoon before concluding with a documentary on British hip hop on Tuesday 29.
Community Engagement Coordinator Nicola Scott expressed her excitement for the event and commented on the approach they are taking this year.
She said: “I am really excited, especially because we are working with programmers across the UK, which we have not done before.
“For example, the first film on Sunday is about black girls and that follows the theme that all of the programmes are directed by black female directors.”
Ms Scott continued by mentioning that the theatre want to showcase the broad identity amongst people of colour and why that is important.
She continued: “Black is a term that means a lot and there are black people across the world with many different lived experiences, so through the programme, we want to show that.”
The first viewing, Snapshort Shorts, is a film which focusses on black female representation and Ms Scott highlighted why they wanted to shine a spotlight on that:
“The representation is sometimes quite low in the TV and film industry, so you do not really hear those stories being told.”
Ms Scott reiterated the importance of GFT commemorating the month and raising awareness.
She concluded: “This is the opportunity to remind people of what black filmmakers have achieved and celebrate the culture.”
