Glasgow launches returnable cup scheme to reduce waste

A returnable cup scheme featuring major brands is launching today in Glasgow
The ‘borrow club’ project, led by environmental charity Hubbub, includes Costa Coffee, Café Nero, Burger King, and Tinderbox, and local cafes like Sprigg.
The scheme aims to reduce waste from the 388 million disposable cups used annually in Scotland and could expand across the UK following a three-month Glasgow trial.
Customers at participating stores can borrow a reusable cup for a £1 deposit.
Cups are available in three sizes and can be returned to any location to reclaim the deposit, receive a clean-up or get a £1 voucher.
The cups were provided by Berry, with RFID technology.

Hubbub’s research shows that whilst 75% of UK residents own reusable options more accessible and reduce disposable cup waste, which accounts for 30% of Glasgow’s on-street drinks waste.
The project will assess its environmental impact with consultancy Carbon Bright. Acting cabinet secretary praised the scheme’s role in advancing Scotland’s circular economy.
