Tourism tax talks set

Glasgow City Council “must carry out a consultation” before a 5% tourism tax will only come to fruition in the city.

Councillors are being asked to approve a discussion on a proposal to approve a 5% tourism tax, aiming to improve tourism facilities.

The 5% visitor tax will add extra costs to hotels, B&Bs, hotels, self-catering accommodation and much more in the city.

According to economists working for the Glasgow Council estimate a 1% charge on visitor accommodation.

A spokesperson for Glasgow City Council said: “On Thursday, members will be asked to approve a formal public consultation process.

They will receive a report on the result of that consultation before deciding whether to implement a levy.”

The tax is expected to generate more than £10m to spend on services to improve tourism facilities like cultural preservation, street cleaning, and to enhance infrastructure.

It is anticipated that the earliest a charge could be applied in Glasgow would be 2027.
