Glasgow University gains world’s biggest street newspaper collection

Glasgow Caledonian University was donated the world’s largest collection of street magazines. The collection, which is to be housed in the university’s archive was donated by the International Network of Street Papers and it contains 8,000 volumes.
Street papers are newspapers or magazines sold by people experiencing poverty or homelessness. They aim to give people a way to earn money that is legitimate, whilst using journalism to address the causes of the problems they face.
The organisation is based in Glasgow and was founded in 1994. The INSP represents 92 street papers in 35 countries and has been translated in 25 different languages.
Glasgow Caledonian University operates for the common good and this idea pairs with these articles since they prominently feature articles from people all over the world. This partners well with the international community and connections the university prides itself on, as it works towards its goal of the common good.
The university’s archive houses over 200 collections that contain a variety of volumes, some of the most notable being the Scottish Trades Union Congress, Scottish Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament archive, Royal Scottish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children and Communist Party Great Britain Scottish Committee.
