Teacher strike date announced by EIS

Teachers throughout Glasgow have planned to strike later this month as they fight back against the numerous job cuts.
Many of Glasgow’s teachers will strike on Thursday 20 February following the mid term break that runs from Monday 17 February to Wednesday 19 February. This serves as a protest to Glasgow city council as they propose to scrap around 450 posts within the next three years. This means that the teaching standards will be affected by all the cuts and will increase the workload for teaching staff and student teachers. Glasgow city council have previously stressed that no teachers in permanent jobs would be made redundant, saving will be made by not filling vacant posts or reducing the staff that are on temporary contracts.
95% of members of the educational institute of Scotland (EIS) voted to walk out on the set date unless the cuts are reversed. The EIS have been campaigning in hopes that the cuts can be reversed and put an end to the ongoing fight for fair pay within Education.
While the walk outs will interrupt the education of students, it will show the importance of teachers and that it is beneficial that cuts are not made when it comes to public education.
