Multiple Glasgow pubs set to shut in 2025

Glasgow’s booming night life is taking a hit early into the new year as multiple pubs and bars are set to shut by April. Only a few months in and 5 pubs have shut down in the city centre alone, with taxes set to increase by another 5% it is no wonder so many businesses are struggling.
Glasgow is known for its popular nightlife with many popular clubs and pubs known throughout the UK, With George square’s local Weatherspoon’s The Counting House being named as one of the top three most loved pubs in the UK and independently owned local Malones Irish Bar opening a new rooftop beer garden.
These new taxes increases brought in by the UK government are expected to cost Scotland’s pubs and restaurants up to £70m a year in additional bills, and with so many local spots being bought or pushed out by franchises more are set to close. One of the cities oldest and beloved pubs The Struthio Bar had suddenly shut early in February with its neighbouring pub the black bull also shutting the previous year.
Hospitality, especially bars were hit hard throughout the Covid-19 pandemic and are just getting back on their feet, with constant taxes rises for the foreseeable future it is a up hill battle for the city’s nightlife, that many do not see ending in the sector favour.
