New leisure centre plans approved for Giffnock

East Renfrewshire Council have approved plans for the Eastwood Leisure Centre and theatre to be demolished as a new £56m site is to be built in its place.

The current site will remain open to service the community while the new site is being built, but will be closed and demolished after the new one is complete.

The building has been standing for 40 years, but locals see it as a welcomed change.

Parents at neighbouring school, St. Ninians, have lodged their discontent with the plans, as the construction will impact the car parking area, as well as becoming a general distraction to students.

Leisure centres have always been crucial to communities, providing easy exercise opportunities to their communities.

Andrew Peden, a personal trainer said, “I think that it will be super for that sort of community”.

I think leisure centres are still very important to local communities, I think they serve a very important role” Peden added.

Construction will begin later this year, with the project expected to be completed by the second-half of 2027.

Plans were previously submitted in 2022, but due to inflation the project was pushed back until now, with new plans submitted in October of last year.
