Fire breaks out at much loved Glasgow West End Indian restaurant

By Erin McCullough

A fire broke out at the beloved Mother India restaurant in Glasgow’s West End on Sunday, causing significant disruption to the area.

Emergency services responded quickly to the scene, with multiple roads closed to facilitate firefighting efforts and ensure public safety. The blaze was reported at 11.15am on Westminster Terrace, and it quickly became clear that the fire had affected the Mother India restaurant, a popular spot known for its vibrant Indian cuisine.

As the fire spread, emergency crews worked to control the situation. The scene quickly drew attention from local businesses and residents, with the smoke visible from nearby streets.

In response to the fire, authorities issued road closures around the area. Sauchiehall Street between Derby Street and North Claremont Street was closed, as were Kelvingrove Street, Westminster Terrace, and Parkgrove Terrace.

Motorists and pedestrians were advised to avoid the area while emergency crews worked on-site. The road closures, though an inconvenience, were essential in allowing firefighters to manage the situation efficiently and keep the public at a safe distance.

Chris Thomson, the sales manager at Chiverinos on Argyle Street, shared his observations about the fire and the immediate response.

“We are a couple of streets along, so it hasn’t caused us any damage, but the emergency services put the fire out swiftly.” he said.

While the immediate damage to the restaurant appears substantial, it is a relief that no injuries were reported. The rapid action by fire crews helped contain the fire before it could spread further into the surrounding area, despite the large-scale response.

Tom Quick, a local resident who lives nearby, also shared his thoughts on the incident.

“I was surprised when I saw the damage. I live really close, so it was a shock to see, especially since the area is usually really busy. It’s a relief they managed to keep it under control. I’ve never been so close to such an incident. It’s definitely unsettling to watch, but it’s good to know everyone is safe.” he commented.

The fire has sent ripples of concern through the local community, particularly given the restaurant’s longstanding reputation as a popular destination for food lovers in Glasgow. As the investigation into the cause of the fire continues, residents and businesses in the area have expressed their relief that the situation was contained without any irreparable loss.

For now, the focus remains on the recovery efforts, both for the business and for the community affected by the road closures and disruption.

As Mother India begins to recover from this unfortunate event, Glasgow’s West End residents are reminded of the importance of community support in the wake of such unexpected incidents.
