Scottish players hurt after Six Nations title hopes ended by defeat to rivals England

By Robbie Wilson

Scotland players say that the defeat to England hurts as it ends the Six Nations title charge.

Edinburgh lock Grant Gilchrist said that: “”We have to now look at winning our last two games and see where that will leave us in the championship,” said Gilchrist.

“That will depend on other results. That is where we are at and it hurts to be saying that.

“I want to be standing here saying ‘we have two games and a chance to win the championship’ but we weren’t quite good enough.”

Scotland currently sit 4th in the Six Nations table with one win and two defeats.

The game between the fierce rivals was a tense affair, both sides were evenly matched throughout.

The major talking point came in the last 5 minutes of the game however, Scotland were down by 6 points before Duhan van der Merwe scored to give kicker Finn Russell the chance to seal the win.

Russell went on to miss his third kick of the game and gift the Calcutta Cup to England, a fixture they hadn’t won in five years.

Former Scotland international believes that compatriot Finn Russell will be ‘really disappointed’ with his conversion rate against England.

He said: “”It was a difficult kick from the touchline and he will be ruing the two earlier in the game which were much easier kicks. To go nil from three is not why Scotland lost but as an international 10, Finn will be really disappointed.”

Some fans on X are calling for Gregor Townsend to leave the squad as they feel that he has taken Scotland as far as he can, but some want him to stay to turn it around.

Scotland will be looking to bounce back in the competition as they host Wales at Murrayfield and then travel to the Stade de France to face France in the tournament closer.
