Glasgow memorial event for Covid-19 reflection day

Memorial events marking five years since the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic are taking place across the country, with yesterday observed as Covid-19 Day of Reflection.

In Glasgow, First Minister John Swinney led a commemorative ceremony at Glasgow Green, laying a wreath at the base of a memorial tree. He was joined by bereaved families who placed photographs of loved ones lost to the virus.

A piper led the procession as a choir performed from the bandstand, and a minute’s silence was observed at noon.

Five white doves were also released to represent each year since the outbreak.

The ceremony was organised by Covid-19 Families Scotland and attended by those who lost relatives during the pandemic.

The reflection event aimed to honor those who died, whilst highlighting the continued effects of the pandemic on individuals, families, and communities across Scotland.

Elizabeth Newman, carer of a long-covid patient, said: “He definitely has health problems from having had covid. It affected his lungs so he’s out of breath a lot now, he has memory loss as well, but I’d say a lot of time he does suffer from PTSD, and flashbacks.

He’s definitely not the same person as he was.”
