International Women’s day overshadowed by following increase

By Maya Barclay

On March 8th 2025 thousands across Glasgow celebrated International Women’s Day with their friends, taking to social media to celebrate all the special women in their lives and their time together, with posting cute celebrations or photos of one another. However, these special celebrations were sadly overshadowed the next day as it was found there has been a rise in women getting followed around the streets. Most women asked explained they’re anxious whenever walking around outside and are left terrified when having to leave the house. One woman fled from Glasgow with her daughter as she was terrified about what could happen to the both of them when they least expect.

Luckily, certain universities have became aware of this issue for women when living over here and have taken it upon themselves to warn young women in particular about the dangers of walking alone in the city centre. Moreover, Glasgow Caledonian University has set up certain support groups and societies for young women in vulnerable situations in order to feel less alone. The university have also gone out of their way to provide women with helplines to call in serious situations to help find a way out.
