South Lanarkshire youth football clubs continue to hit back at the council

2 min read
Grassroots football clubs across South Lanarkshire are hitting back at the council due to price hike proposals.

The local authority has slashed discounts for youth football clubs as they propose a rise of over double.

Currently, the children’s teams receive a discount of 75 per cent for their lets, the proposal is set raise this to 50 per cent.

This is a rise of 114%.

And grassroots officials are planning to get together next week for a crisis meeting in a bid to fight back.

Grassroots football clubs were protesting outside of the South Lanarkshire Council HQ in Hamilton earlier this week

MSP for Glasgow Pam Duncan-Glancy said: “Year on year cuts to local authority budgets from the SNP Green Government are having a devastating impact on local communities.

“Local Councils are really struggling.

“It’s high time the Scottish Government recognised that they can’t continue to expect councils or communities to accept these cuts. If they want a Scotland with equality, opportunity and a focus on community like the FM says they do, then they’re going to have to start putting their money where their mouth is.”

Blantyre Community Council have set up a petition calling on South Lanarkshire Leisure Trust Members and all councillors to reverse the decision.

There will be a full council meeting held on May 17.
