Controversy over North Lanarkshire closures
2 min readNorth Lanarkshire council has announced their plans to close 39 sports centres, swimming pools, library’s and council facilities.
This decision was made in an attempt to save £64 million. However many people think that there are better ways to save this money.
Leader of the SNP group for North Lanarkshire said:
“It wouldn’t be my choice for how the council would save money.
“I think it is a very drastic decision. It would not be my groups choice.”
Many residents are also upset by this decision.
Mary Russel is a parent at Bellshill Sharks swim team and said:
“It is like a family. Not only for the kids but us parents also spend a lot of time up at the club.
“It is something that is beneficial for the kids mental and physical health.”
A spokesperson from the council said:
“A difficult decision to close 39 community facilities across North Lanarkshire was made by the council following a comprehensive review which considered their usage, condition and maintenance costs.
“The council simply does not have the funding to maintain the current estate in a sustainable way in the face of having to save £64 million over the next three years.
“Our immediate priority is to engage with users of facilities to identify suitable alternative venues for activities and bookings where possible, while a phased closure is carried out.
“This will take some time, and we will update users of facilities throughout.
“Although the council is continuing with a hugely ambitious investment programme, which will see some facilities replaced in new hubs, the reality is that we need to meet the needs of people across North Lanarkshire in a way that sees services delivered through an overall reduced estate.”
