Proposal to demolish historic Glasgow building sparks fury

Glasgow residents have hit out at plans to knock down a listed building in Glasgow city centre.

Regent Property is proposing to demolish 90-96 Maxwell Street to make space for a new hotel or short-stay apartment complex.

The building, which stands behind the St Enoch Centre, is B-listed and it was built around 1868 for McCorquodales Printers.

The property company hopes that the project will “support the wider regeneration of Glasgow” and “attract tourism and footfall to the area”.

However, Glasgow residents have taken to social media to reject the proposals.

Andrew Stanson said: “Glasgow has some of the best Victorian architecture. Why do the council and government not have the foresight to renovate and restore rather than reducing to rubble and replacing with rubbish?”

Edward McGurn said: “I thought we learned a long time ago that destroying old buildings destroys the charm and attachment people have to their city! So why do we still have this obsession with demolishing any part of Glasgow we can?”

Regent Property is set to hold a public consultation event on Wednesday February 28 at Granite House on Stockwell Street.
