Firefighters have finally managed to extinguish a huge blaze at an Ayrshire recycling plant.

Fenix Battery Recycling on Byrehill Place in Kilwinning, went up in flames around 10.00pm last night, with residents told to stay indoors and keep their windows closed.

Witnesses reported hearing loud explosions and seeing large plumes of black smoke.

Locals in the surrounding streets were told to evacuate overnight, with Pryde of Playz community centre opening its doors for those seeking shelter.

Kilwinning native Lauren Stapleton posted on Facebook: “Anyone in the Pennyburn area evacuate ASAP as the fire is becoming uncontrollable. I live right next to it and held off after fire brigade had chapped my door and told me to close all vents etc. or evacuate if possible.

“Once I heard explosions I made the decision to leave. Even if the fire doesn’t spread the toxic smoke is not worth staying in the area. Get out if you can.”

Another resident, Lisa Venman, added: “I live in the estate but up the back and no one has told us to evacuate. It’s across the road at the other houses and hasn’t spread further, the smoke is bad though.”

The fire brigade was still on the scene at 9.00am this morning, however it is believed that the inferno was contained during the night and was fully extinguished around 1.00pm this afternoon.

Byrehill Road remains closed as emergency crews continue attempts to determine the cause of the incident.
