Floating Wind Turbine Farm Given the Green Light by Scottish Government

1 min read

Approval has been given for the world’s biggest floating wind farm to be built in Scotland.

The Green Volt project, a joint endeavour between Aberdeen’s Flotation Energy and Norwegian power company Vårgrønn, will see up to 35 floating wind turbines built off the Peterhead coast in the North Sea.

Hywind Tampen in Norway is the current leader in the sector, with 11 turbines in place already – a figure the new farm in Aberdeen is set to triple.

Green Volt will have the capacity to generate around 560 megawatts of renewable energy and the plans are set to generate around £3bn in investments, as well as generating hundreds of new jobs in the area.

The news comes after the Scottish Government scrapped “world-leading” plans to dramatically reduce greenhouse gases by 2030.

Despite this, First Minister Humza Yousaf said the Scottish government are still on track to reach its net zero carbon emissions target by 2045.
