“It’s true that more needs to be on deck concerning Scottish Rugby”

1 min read

Reactions have trailed Richard Cockerill’s assessment that Scotland is falling behind other nations when it comes to developing players for Rugby.

Richard Cockerill who was former Edinburgh head coach said young players in Scotland do not have the physical capability to play Rugby games as the people responsible for training them are not good enough.

He added that the same people responsible for their training back then in 2017 when he was the head coach at Edinburgh are still the same people there.

In reaction, Editor of Scotland Rugby News, Gavin Harper said though Richard Cockerill assessment of Scottish Rugby’s male player pathway system is scathing, but he is right.

Gavin Harper said: “While there are undoubtedly talented players coming through the age-grade systems, results show Scotland have fallen behind the other home nations, and other Six Nations countries, in their development of young players.”

He added that the upcoming summer tour to the Americas might be a step towards addressing the problem of developing Rugby players in Scotland.

“I expect Gregor Townsend to take a youthful squad with the likes of Finn Russell and Duhan van der Merwe given the summer off, but there’s serious work for Scottish Rugby’s incoming performance director to improve the pathways for young players.”
