Unions unite over £38 million ‘missing’ from social care budget

1 min read

Four worker unions have joined together for the first time in years to protest low wages for the social care sector.

Protesters gathered outside of Holyrood to demand the reinstatement of the Fair Work in Social Care budget.

The Scottish government had made a commitment to invest £38 million in providing fairer wages to those working in the social care sector, however upon the announcement of the most recent budget, this funding had been withdrawn.

Workers from GMB, Unison, Unite and the STUC all convened in a multi-union protest, the likes of which has not occurred in over a decade.

Union representatives met with members of parliament after the protest to demand £15 per hour minimum wages for care staff, as well as to know why the government had decided to U-turn on their initial pledge.
